Dental implants combined with crowns offer a long-term, natural-looking solution for missing or damaged teeth. While the final result is excellent, the process involves several stages, and recovery takes place over time.

This guide explains what to expect at each stage of dental implant and crown treatment, including healing times, common symptoms, and when your final crown is fitted.

Stage 1: Initial Consultation and Planning

Before treatment begins, our dental team at Cosmetic Surgery Cyprus & Turkey will:

  • Review your dental history

  • Assess gum health and bone density

  • Examine X-rays or a CT scan

  • Confirm whether an implant, crown, or combination is required

If a tooth is present but damaged, a dental crown alone may be recommended. If the tooth is missing or unsalvageable, an implant and crown will be planned.

Stage 2: Dental Implant Placement (Day 0)

The dental implant is a titanium post placed into the jawbone to act as an artificial tooth root. This procedure is usually carried out under local anaesthetic, sometimes with sedation.

What to Expect After Implant Surgery

  • Mild to moderate swelling

  • Tenderness around the implant site

  • Minor bleeding for the first 24 hours

Most patients manage discomfort with standard pain relief and can resume light activities within 1 to 2 days.

Stage 3: Early Healing (First 7 to 10 Days)

During this period:

  • Swelling gradually reduces

  • Stitches, if used, may dissolve or be removed

  • Soft foods are recommended

  • Oral hygiene must be gentle but thorough

This phase focuses on gum healing, not bone integration.

Stage 4: Osseointegration (6 to 12 Weeks or Longer)

Osseointegration is the process by which the jawbone bonds with the implant. This is a critical stage and cannot be rushed.

During This Time:

  • The implant remains beneath the gum or covered by a healing cap

  • You may wear a temporary crown or denture if needed

  • Normal daily activities can usually be resumed

Bone healing typically takes 3 months, depending on bone quality, health, and whether bone grafting was required.

Stage 5: Abutment Placement (If Required)

Once the implant is fully integrated, an abutment may be attached. This is the connector between the implant and the crown.

This is a minor procedure with minimal recovery time, often involving:

  • Mild gum tenderness and little to no downtime

Stage 6: Dental Crown Fitting

The dental crown is the final visible tooth placed on top of the implant or prepared natural tooth.

Crown Fitting Involves:

  • Digital scans or impressions

  • Shade matching for a natural appearance

  • Secure attachment of the crown

If the crown is placed on a natural tooth, recovery is usually immediate. If placed on an implant, this marks the completion of treatment.

Recovery After Crown Placement

After your crown is fitted:

  • Mild sensitivity may occur for a few days

  • Normal eating can usually resume within 24 hours

  • Oral hygiene should continue as normal

Once healed, implant-supported crowns function and feel like natural teeth.

When Can I Travel Home?

Many patients return home:

  • 2 to 3 days after implant placement

  • On the same or following day after crown fitting

Your dentist will confirm safe travel timing based on your individual treatment plan.

Long-Term Healing and Care

With good oral hygiene and regular dental check-ups:

  • Dental implants can last many years

  • Crowns typically last 10 to 15 years or longer

  • Gum health is critical to long-term success

Smoking and poor oral hygiene significantly increase the risk of implant complications.
