Day of surgery
After checking in at reception of the A&E department of the Near East University Hospital, Nicosia; I was taken to my own private room with ensuite facilities and asked to wait for Dr. Bugra. Shortly after a nurse arrived with a hair net and a blue surgery robe; as I was freshly showered and my clothes were clean on, I was allowed to leave my leggings, t-shirt and socks on which made me feel more secure than just the gown. About 30 minutes later I met Dr. Bugra for the first time; he was professional and friendly as he made the incision markings around my eyes with a pen and a nurse took a blood sample to test before surgery.
Not long after I was taken on a trolley to the operating theatre and a fabulous warm blanket was laid completely over me and I felt very warm and snug. The operating theatre was large, modern and extremely clean and bright. Then Dr. Bugra and his assistant nurse arrived and a few more sterilised cloths were positioned around my face and neck and then my face was thoroughly covered in iodine (an antiseptic wash prior to surgery and also a topical antiseptic). Dr. Bugra – who’s English is exceptional – said that he could give me step by step commentary during the procedure or I could just lie back and relax. I chose to just relax and ask the odd question as I wanted. The overhead lights were enormous, very bright and warm and with some lovely gentle music playing I felt as if I was laying on a hot beach somewhere and I was completely at ease.
Dr. Bugra informed me that he was going to administer the anaesthetic and that I would feel a painful, burning sensation. So, preparing myself, I took a deep breath and yes it was uncomfortable but it was nothing like I imagined and it was over in seconds…Phew! One of the things that surprised me most was that I did not have to lay rigid still for 2.5 hours; I was completely relaxed and if I needed to shift my body slightly, I just gave Dr. Bugra warning. Considering I was actually having surgery, I couldn’t believe how comfortable and snug I felt. With Dr. Bugra working one side and his nurse leaning across from the other side, I felt completely safe, chilled and actually enjoyed the fact that I did not have to do anything but feel the warmth, float off to the sounds of music and day dream about my life etc.
When the procedure was completed Dr. Bugra bandaged both my eyes and I was taken back to my room to rest for a couple of hours until a nurse came to remove the bandages and I was free to leave.
The following 6x days I spent relaxing and doing nothing but gentle walking and watching numerous movies on my laptop. It was heaven to have an excuse to be so wonderfully lazy. I followed the instructions of placing ice cubes gently over both eyes every 20 minutes for the first 2x days and then reduced it to a few times a day over the next week. I placed the pillows on my bed so that I slept in a slightly raised position and I used artificial tear drops when my eyes felt itchy. I used a dry spray shampoo to make me feel more groomed and fresh and enjoyed warm baths being extremely careful to get no water on my face. Every day that passed an improvement was seen and felt and by day 7 when the stitches were removed I was amazed. I have continued to heal daily and am now following the advice of gently massaging the stitch lines.
Would I go through it again?….with Cosmetic Surgery Cyprus, Dr. Bugra and Gill …….YES I WOULD. THANK YOU GUYS
